1903 Cafe

Just past Town Moto on Ossington street, you’ll find the first presence of anything Harley Davidson in downtown Toronto at 1903 Cafe. With the rise in popularity of events such as The Moto Social,  Harley has decided to get into the coffee business to attract the young riders looking for a place to meet up before or after a ride for a caffeinated beverage. But when you think of a cafe, you might imagine something small and quaint. This definitely wasn’t that.

In true Harley fashion, they went big. As you walk into the space, you’re greeted by a long coffee bar (hosted by Fahrenheit Coffee) looking over a series of new Harley Davidson models and large murals on the walls. Beyond that, you’ll find a series of seating areas scattered with new and old bikes, along with collections of old posters and memorabilia. At the very end of the space, a workshop has been set up to include a ride simulator and it appears as though they may be hosting some workshops and classes while they’re here.

The Race of Gentlemen 2016

We’re back at it! Once again making the long 10 hour drive from Toronto to Wildwood, NJ. to cover the greatest race on earth for the second year in a row - The Race of Gentlemen.

As always with The Race of Gentlemen (or TROG as it's now known as), you never know what you're gonna see but there were some big changes this year. First, it was held in June instead of October. In previous years, when you’d arrive in Wildwood, it was a complete ghost town. Half of the stores were closed due to the season and the boardwalk and beaches were deserted. It felt as if we had taken over this sleepy little town for the weekend. This year, being in June, Wildwood was just ramping up for the summer season. This definitely helped to increase the attendance of TROG, but that feeling of being part of a “secret meet up” is certainly over. 

One of my favorite changes to TROG was the addition of The Wall of DEATH. It’s nothing too crazy, just a guy on an old Indian sitting sidesaddle without using his hands or feet, flying around the inside wall of a 12-foot high wooden barrel. Nothing too crazy at all. This daredevil is Rhett Giordano, and he couldn’t be happier to be doing what he does best. When the Wall of Death comes to town, it’s a must see.

In previous years, there was a lighthearted spirit to the competition. No one seemed to be overly concerned with the wins, but this year was different… Louder, faster, and meaner machines were flying down the beach fighting to be the first past the finish line. This year, the attitude was certainly to win with the racers rolling into TROG with purpose-built bikes made for dominating the sand. It’s a new chapter for The Race of Gentlemen and this is certainly just the beginning. What will roll onto the beach in the years to come? I’m excited to find out.

The Quail Motorcycle Gathering 2016

Time flies when you’re having fun and that’s how The Quail Motorcycle Gathering feels. The 15-category event is a unique combination of tradition, heritage, innovation and glamour honoring both pre and post-war eras of the world. It celebrates the evolution of the motorcycle by bringing together the finest sport and racing machines that are museum quality, obscure, or rare motorcycles alongside custom, handmade, and modified works. Regardless of one’s motorcycle compulsion, the gathering of interesting and beautiful machines is a sight to behold. There’s never enough time to take in all the superb machinery or people that love them and that is a sure sign of a great time.

The location of The Quail Lodge’s intimate lawn setting with ocean breeze creates an environment that encourages excitement and a uniquely pleasurable experience that is contagious. While navigating through the concourse of exquisite motorcycles, awe and wonder take over. It never ceases to amaze how so many interesting and historic motorcycles make the pilgrimage to Quail for the day. It’s a wonderful thing to meander amongst machines that are so loved when suddenly your gaze is captured, encouraging conversation, allowing stories to be shared, and bonds to be made.

The weekend starts even before the event. For most, the journey to Carmel, California is when the adventure begins. This was the first year where the stars aligned and I was able to ride up on my 1969 BMW R60US, perfect timing for BMW’s 100-year anniversary. On the Wednesday before the event Kurht and I departed for an overdue road trip up the coast from Los Angeles on our like bikes, him on his 1964 R60/2. If you are a rider, I highly recommend going on an adventure with a friend that rides the same bike. The subtle joy of shifting in the same places, taking inclines at the same speed, and whipping around turns with comparable (lack of) brakes resonates quietly at first, and then gradually the synchronized dance adds another level of enjoyment to the excursion.

Upon arrival to Carmel, the weekend kicked off on Friday with The Quail Ride; a 100-mile tour de force with some show bikes alongside other unique and rarified machines which were put through their paces on back roads of the Monterey Peninsula. The first stop is Laguna Seca Raceway for a few laps around the track. With the adrenaline kicked into gear, next came a picturesque ride through the grape vine countryside to the hillside winery. After a tour and much needed break which allowed for closer inspection of bikes and chats with the other riders, the next and last stop was a visit and preview of the much-anticipated new Talbott Motorcycle Museum helmed by collector and motorsports enthusiast Robb Talbott. As if the days feasting on landscape lined twisties and glistening chrome wasn’t enough, the action packed day closes with a banquet and presentation honoring and celebrating the legacy and motorcycle heritage.

Suddenly it was Saturday and the event was upon us for the 8th annual Quail. The BMW Classics section celebrating its 100-year anniversary was set up at the front of the show with machines representing different aspects of its legacy. Robb Talbott’s restored 1925 BMW R37 race bike took highest honors as Best in Show.
